Restoration of Black Earth Creek through Walking Iron County Park and Lions Park

Paired with rehabilitation of an adjacent oak savanna, the project (to be completed Fall 2025) highlights large wood practices for instream habitat, bank stabilization and floodplain development, while also including more traditional design elements such as boulders and constructed riffles. The surrounding ground has been lowered to improve the creek’s connection with the floodplain, incorporating overflow channels and riparian wetlands to mitigate flooding and improve downstream water quality. The shoreland area was planted with native trees, shrubs and herbaceous vegetation, and topped off with improvements to the trail network, fishing access, and canoe launch.
