Meet our newest BECWA Board Member: Audrey Rice
Audrey Rice, BECWA Board Member
My husband, dog, and I have lived in Cross Plains for about 12 years, and we have always appreciated the beautiful landscape that surrounds the village. We frequently hike and mountain bike local trails and, of course, fish Black Earth Creek. I learned to fly fish on the creek, and it quickly became one of my favorite activities. Although I have caught more branches than fish, it is a perfect way to step away from everyday responsibilities and lose track of time.
Over the years, I have made friends while fishing the creek and shared stories with visitors from neighboring states. I have even had the pleasure of being out-fished by a bald eagle on more than one occasion along South Valley Road. When I began hearing about local developments that could potentially affect Black Earth Creek, I decided to learn more about how I could help protect this important resource.
What began as curiosity, a desire to learn about creek conservation, and a wish to become more involved in the community eventually led to helping plan and volunteer for BECWA events. I was delighted when asked to join the BECWA Board of Directors, a group I had already gotten to know well. At first, I was hesitant. I was still learning about the creek and had no background in biology or environmental science. Like many people stepping into a new role, I experienced a bit of imposter syndrome. The members of the BECWA Board were welcoming and encouraging and I soon realized I didn’t need to be an expert to contribute. The spirit of the association is about caring for our creek and watershed, taking action when needed, and learning alongside one another and the broader community.
I am excited to continue learning, supporting BECWA’s mission, and helping protect Black Earth Creek for future generations.
I hope to see you on the stream!
Audrey
